Samsara is a lovely-looking puzzle game with portals, mysterious getaways and block shifts. In Indian Sanskrit, ‘Samsara’ means “constant wandering” and stands for the ‘eternal cycle’, also known as ‘the wheel of life’. Samsara presents indeed a very compelling app game. The player uses very simple mechanics in order to solve increasingly challenging levels of puzzles.
You play as Zee, a beautifully-designed little boy, who while playing in a park notices a squirrel and he decides to follow. On the move he accidentally falls into a portal and gets transported to another world. The new world holds two halves, a normal everyday scene and an upside-down area, where it isn’t always mirrored the other half. In more than 70+ levels the objective remains the same: “Help Zee navigate the space to get out of the portal”.
The game takes you into different locations. You start out in the park and later travel through a suburban area, to an amusement park and a beach. Each location serves only as a background for the puzzle though. Each level offers only one solution and the surroundings are just for the visual impact. The mirrored (upside-down) world reflects the real world but with a shadowy purple color. Seems like the world underneath is just the reflection of the world above. As you progress further, you’ll encounter levels where as well as guiding Zee to the escape point of the portal, you must also help his shadowy resemblance get to his own portal as well. In certain levels it isn’t enough that only Zee escapes, his shadow must do as well.
To solve the puzzles you’ll have very limited tools. In the beginning you have objects which can only be placed in either the world above or the upside-down, that create platforms and scales for the boys to cross through. If you place an object in the upside-down, it will mirror reciprocally in the real world. Contrariwise, placing the same object in the real world won’t reflect in the obscure world. In later levels, the objects will have added properties, such as apparently gold substance objects when placed in the underside space will shift up in world above.
