- Intro
Super Smash Bros features a series of crossover fighting video games initially published by Nintendo. The game features characters from their previous various franchises and it was firstly introduced and released on 1999. Right after that, in 2001, Super Smash Bros. Melee was released for the GameCube gaming system and it became quickly the best selling game upon that system. Afterwards a third edition of the game was released in 2008 for the Wii gamers and it was called Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The third edition came out as an unprecedented collaboration of several companies and it became reasonably a massive hit for the Wii users all over the world. Then a fourth edition was revealed on 2014, called Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, that would make things once again euphoric for everyone who unconditionally felt in love with the previous editions of the series. To reach to this day a fifth installment is available on Nintendo Switch and it’s the well-known Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The game displays many characters from a large variety of games such as Mario, King Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and not least Pokemon.
Originally the Super Smash Bros, had only 12 playable characters but now includes also third-party characters. Some characters are able to transform into different forms where each form has its own style of play and set of moves. The game is overly praised for its unique multiplayer mode and is very well received by all the critics. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released worldwide on December 18’ and since the first day immediately gained a huge scale of acclaim and managed to exceed every expectation. Several new characters were involved in the new game as well as an exciting story mode gameplay, featured likewise in the Brawl edition.
- Gameplay
The gameplay in all the Super Smash Bros. series changes from many other fighting games of its kind.
Instead of winning by emptying an opponent’s life bar, the players must seek to kick their opponents off the stage and outside the bounds of the given arena. All characters have a damage total which goes up as they are being damaged and is represented by a percentage value that measures up to 999%. As a character’s percentage rises, he can be knocked even more farther by the opponent’s attacks. In order to finish off an opponent, the only way is to knock that character outside the arena’s boundaries in any direction. As a character is kicked off the stage, he/ she character can always attempt to recover by using jumping moves and according abilities to return back again onto the stage. Some characters though have an easier time recovering than others due to their special set of moves and abilities. The characters also vary in weight, thus lighter characters are easier to launch than the heavy ones. The game features two main game modes: Time and Stock. Time mode uses a point-based system in where fighters earn points by knocking out their opponents and lose accordingly points by being knocked out and the player with the highest score at the end of the set time limit wins the match. Stock mode is also known as ‘Survival’ mode uses a life-based system in where players are given a certain number of lives with each fighter losing a life whenever they are knocked out and becoming eliminated if they run out of lives. The winner is the last fighter standing once all other fighters are eliminated or, if a time limit is applied to the match, the fighter with the most lives remaining as time runs out. In a tie, a Sudden Death match takes place where each of the tied fighters are given a starting damage percentage of 300%, making them easier to launch off the stage, and the last fighter standing wins the match.
- Controls
The controls in the game are pretty more simplified than other fighting games. One button is used for standard attacks while another one for the special attacks. Players are able to perform different types of moves by holding the direction controls as up, down and on the side, or even in an uncommitted position with just pressing the attack or special attack button. Each character has its corresponding four different ground, mid-air, and special attacks that can be performed accordingly. By quickly pressing or tapping a directional input along with the attack button while being on the ground with your character will make you perform a chargeable “Smash Attack”, which is commonly more powerful than other available attacks of your character. Whenever your character will be hit, a numbness will occur upon him and will temporarily disallow you to counter-attack. While the shield button allows players to put up a defensive shield, it gets weaker after taking hits and in case it gets broken it will leave your character unable to move. If you combine shield button with the directional commands and attack buttons your player will perform different types of dodges, rolls, grabs and throws. So to make it clear these are the main and only actions in Super Smash Bros.: attack, grab, and shield, which are often compared to the rock-paper-scissors similarity. Thus attacking beats grabbing, grabbing beats shielding and shielding beats attacking. According to this system, the game is centered around a simple and yet very exciting gameplay which offers a lot of funny and antagonistic fighting.
Some character have as well their corresponding battle items such as battering tools with which they may hit an opponent, or even recovery items which allow their users to reduce their damage percentage in a certain amount.
- Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List
Super Smash Bros Ultimate Tier List represents who’s on top of the evolution chain inside the Super Smash Bros world. The list ranks fighters based on their potential for success against the rest of them. But also keep in mind that characters can rise and fall throughout the game’s journey over the period of time. We categorised the characters as per their caused damage and effectiveness on recovery. Do whatever you want but try to avoid the characters from the ‘Weak’ Tier as they’re too slow and not too enjoyable to be controlled.
